Hawaii alternative energy pioneer Frank Rogers is announcing the activation of the first ChargePoint Networked Charging Station for electric vehicles in the history of Oahu. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on Saturday, January 23rd at noon at the grand opening of his new Green Energy Outlet location in Kakaako. The local and state-wide press is cordially invited to attend. (This event is open to the public and prominent local political leaders have been invited.)

The ChargePoint Networked Charging Station itself is made by Coulomb Technologies of Campbell, California. It is part of a smart charging infrastructure for plug-in vehicles called the ChargePoint Network. The unit recognizes the EV driver, charges the vehicle safely, and communicates with both the network and driver. It even sends updates and alerts to the EV driver via e-mail and text-message.

ChargePoints have already been installed at over 50 locations around the mainland and on Maui. The Maui location is at the MECO headquarters in Kahalui and takes power from a wind turbine. The GEO unit will draw power from a solar panel array on the roof. This is all the brainchild of one of GEO's vendors, Mike Leone, CEO of Maui-based Hawaii Electric Vehicle (HIEV). His company is the exclusive Hawaii distributor for ChargePoint. Mike said, "It's time that energy self-sufficiency for Hawai'i stops being a dream and starts to become a reality. I hope that all Oahu supporters of Electric Vehicles and alternative energy will come out on the 23rd to help us kick off the beginning of a new era of clean transportation!"
